This current series “Vessels” was begun just after returning from a trip to Venice in late October.When a friend began pulling parts of old posters off the walls, I also began to see Venice with a fresh look, carefully peeling off layers.
Something clicked – they and the ancient architecture of the city inspired me to begin collages/mixed media pieces focusing on vessels. A palette knife added more texture and dimension to the acrylic work on canvas.
Now the paintings fuse mythology with my personal memories of vessels, their origin and startling similarities found common in diverse cultures… Vessels are archeological traces of time that suggest vestiges of previous life. They may have held food, water, spices, ashes or whatever humans might have needed…
